Polar Bear Farm’s ShowTime application brings video recording to the iPhone.
Current Features:
• 320 x 427 resolution
• 6 frames per second capture rate
• 5 second record limit on unlicensed version, unlimited for licensed users.
•Raw uncompressed file format playable using QuickTime player on either Mac or PC. See the FAQ below for info on colour conversion. (We’re working on a convertor for previous recorded .vid files to this format, due for release soon.)
Note that at this stage ShowTime does not record audio. We are working to add this, along with realtime compression in future updates.
Planned Features:
• Higher capture frame rate.
•Compression
•Audio Capture
FAQ:
How do I install ShowTime?
Firstly at the moment you must have a jailbroken iPhone (just until Apple get that SDK out). There are plenty of tutorials around on how to jailbreak. Then simply add our repository to Installer.app:
• Open Installer, tap “Sources” at the bottom right corner
• Tap “Edit” at the top right corner
• Tap “Add” at the top left corner
• Enter “http://www.polarbearfarm.com/repo/” into the popup, and tap “OK”
• Tap “Done” at the top right corner
• Tap “Refresh” at the top left corner.
Then ShowTime will appear in the “Multimedia” category.
Where are the recorded videos stored?
Videos are recorded to /var/root/Media/PBFVideo/ (/var/mobile/Media/PBFVideo on 1.1.3 phones) you can use SSH/SFTP to transfer videos on and off the iPhone.
Why is the colour incorrect when played back using QuickTime player?
This is because the iPhone captures the raw pixel colour components in the reverse order to that expected by QuickTime player. This means that the red and blue channels are reversed when playing back on your Mac or PC. You can download a tool which will correct this problem on the video you copy off your phone here:
